Picking the Carcass

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 20:01:34 GMT

Picking the Carcass: At the end of last year, British death metal/grindcore legends Carcass were at the Forum, performing alongside Amon Amarth, Obituary and Cattle Decapitation. Their latest headline show at the Observatory with Sacred Reich and Municipal Waste looks equally impressive, if a bit more low key. Mega heavy metal from some of the masters. Don’t miss.We reviewed that Forum show, and wrote that: “Liverpool’s Carcass took the challenge laid down by Obituary and faced it head on. Their set was slightly longer at nine songs, but still way too short. Carcass, who are one of the many bands with a Napalm Death connection (guitarist Bill Steer was an early member), are considered a pioneer of grindcore, though they also helped develop the melodic death metal sub-genre. But that’s all academic, and the impact of Carcass is purely visceral. ‘Buried Dreams’ and ”Kelly’s Meat Emporium’ had blasted by before we’d blinked, and by the time ‘Corporal...

SAN FRANCISCO — The Oakland A’s outfield is rounding into form. But will look a lot different than the 2022 Opening Day group.Cristian Pache, one of the big names involved in the trade that sent Matt Olson to the Atlanta Braves, was informed that he didn’t make the cut for the Oakland A’s big league roster. The outfielder could be traded or designated for assignment and exposed to waivers, where all other teams will have the opportunity to claim him.Manager Mark Kotsay said “there are some teams interested” in Pache.“This kid still has a big future in this game, in my opinion,” he said. “He’s a plus defender and I think the offensive side, it always takes longer to develop. Unfortunately for us, where we’re at, we kind of ran out of time with that.”The 24-year-old can remain in the A’s organization if he clears waivers and the team sends him to Triple-A Las Vegas.Pache was a fresh face who embraced the fanbase immediately through...

OAKLAND — Two men who’d been convicted of murder and sentenced to life were quietly released from prison last year, after a key witness in their trial signed a sworn declaration accusing an Oakland detective of paying her tens of thousands of dollars to lie on the stand. The woman’s explosive accusations resulted in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office agreeing to concede a defense motion dismissing the charges against two Oakland men who had been accused of fatally shooting a man over a parking dispute. Prosecutors only agreed to dismiss the case after the investigator, Oakland police Detective Phong Tran, admitted in court papers to paying the woman in cash, but claimed the amount was a fraction of the $30,000 she claims to have received from him.Tran, a longtime detective in the homicide unit, was placed on administrative leave last year related to the fallout from the murder case but is back investigating cases.Oakland police did not immediately r...
