MADRID (AP) — Second-seeded Daniil Medvedev advanced to the third round of the Madrid Open after beating qualifier Andrea Vavassori 6-4, 6-3 on Saturday in the Russian’s first match of the tournament. The third-ranked Medvedev leads the men’s circuit with four titles won this season, all on hard courts. He is considered the top challenger to defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, who fought back to beat Emil Ruusuvuori in three sets in his opener on Friday.Medvedev, however, said he is keeping his expectations in check given the surface is not his best.“I will try my best as always,” Medvedev said. “Today I felt very good on the court, and on the rallies I was in control and that is very important on clay.”The 164th-ranked Vavassori upset two-time Madrid winner Andy Murray in the previous round. The Italian played well early on and forced Medvedev to save three break points. But the former U.S. Open winner took control by breaking his opponent on his last service game of the first s...Russia promises ‘harsh’ response after Poland seizes Warsaw building

Moscow on Saturday said there would be a “harsh” reaction and consequences for Poland’s interests in Russia, after Polish authorities seized a building near Moscow’s embassy in Warsaw — a step Russia labeled “illegal.”The building, used as a high school for the children of diplomats, belongs to the Warsaw city hall, Polish foreign ministry spokesman Łukasz Jasina told AFP, adding that authorities had acted on a bailiff’s order. But Russia’s foreign ministry slammed the move as a “hostile” act in violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and as an encroachment against Russian diplomatic property in Poland.“Such an insolent step by Warsaw, which goes beyond the framework of civilized inter-state relations, will not remain without a harsh reaction and consequences for the Polish authorities and Polish interests in Russia,” the ministry added.“Our opinion, which has been confirmed by the courts...Cloudy with showers this weekend

Caleb Kilian’s first taste of the big leagues didn’t play out as the right-hander hoped.Kilian allowed 13 earned runs in 11⅓ innings over three starts for the Chicago Cubs in June. A left knee issue bothered him the rest of the season at Triple-A Iowa where he posted a 5.37 ERA in his final 16 starts. Healthy entering big-league camp this spring, Kilian showed the type of stuff that made him the Cubs’ top pitching prospect last season.Kilian, 25, gets another major-league chance Saturday when the Cubs will recall him to start against the Miami Marlins.“He’s always been a confident guy,” vice president of player development Jared Banner said Friday. “I think his delivery is in a really good place and stuff’s in a really good place and that’s a good combination.”In his last two outings at Triple-A Iowa, Kilian surrendered one run in nine innings with three walks and five strikeouts.“Having him come up to the big l...Sued by Dolphins, embattled ‘fan cruise’ promoter seeks a second chance

A vacation promoter being sued by the Miami Dolphins over a complaint-ridden “fan cruise” says he wants an opportunity to organize a second cruise and “make everything right.”“This should have been a long-term partnership,” said Jeffrey Nahom, president of Boca Raton-based First Class Cruises, the Dolphins’ partner in what was to be a three-year contract to run fan cruises in 2023, 2024 and 2025. “I still think we can somehow salvage this because a lawsuit doesn’t do anyone any good.”Instead of planning for next year’s fan cruise, Nahom and his company are defendants in a federal lawsuit filed on April 21 by the Miami Dolphins. The suit was filed 11 days after the return of a seven-day cruise aboard MSC Seascape that was promoted as a once-in-a-lifetime chance for Fins fans to meet and mingle with 35 legendary players including Dan Marino, Larry Csonka, Mark Clayton and O.J. McDuffie. The suit seeks to recover nearly $...As battle for Sudan continues, civilian deaths top 400
