NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump is set to be arraigned Tuesday after his indictment in New York City, court officials said Friday. Trump’s planned surrender will usher in the unprecedented scenario of a former U.S. commander-in-chief being arrested and arraigned.Trump’s indictment, announced Thursday, came after a grand jury probe into hush money paid during the 2016 presidential campaign to squelch allegations of an extramarital sexual encounter. The indictment itself has remained sealed, as is standard in New York before an arraignment.Trump has denied any wrongdoing and denounced the investigation as a “scam,” a “persecution,” an injustice and a political low blow aimed at damaging his 2024 presidential run. He is a Republican; the district attorney who oversaw the inquiry, Alvin Bragg, is a Democrat. No ex-president has ever been charged with a crime before, so there’s no rulebook for booking one. Trump has Secret Service protection,...

A fatal fire that burned through a rooming house in New Bedford on Tuesday started accidentally, fire officials announced Friday. Investigators determined the fire started in Room 205, located at the left rear of the second floor. They were able to rule out all potential causes except an event involving a microwave in that location or the wall outlet it was plugged into.“Our thoughts are still with the families who lost loved ones, the residents who were injured, and those who lost all their belongings,” said Chief Scott Kruger. “I’d like to express my deep appreciation to the New Bedford firefighters and mutual aid departments who put everything they had into containing this fire and protecting the surrounding structures. This was a tragic event, but it could have been much worse without the assistance of our public safety partners and our community.”All residents of the four-story rooming house were displaced by the fire and two people were killed. The first the victim was i...

How can The Sun dare to hold O’s ownership accountable? How can we not? | COMMENTARY

Journalism is not a profession given to pleasing the rich and powerful on a regular basis. One certainty of the trade — at least if you are doing it correctly — is that not everyone appreciates seeing the truth about themselves in print for all the world to read (or at least the Baltimore metropolitan area). In its nearly two centuries of following the promise of “Light For All,” The Baltimore Sun’s reporters, photographers, editors and others have received their share of bluster, threats and legal filings thrown at them from influential politicians, public figures, business people and, yes, even the owners of sports franchises inconvenienced by objective reality. You think your job has its annoyances? Try getting in a shouting match with Baltimore Colts’ owner Bob Irsay as he blatantly lied about his plans to move the NFL franchise out of Charm City three decades ago. Was The Sun wrong to challenge his false narrative? To press for answers? To loo...

By The New York Daily NewsManhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg pushed back against House GOP members nosing into the criminal investigation into former president Donald Trump, calling their interference “improper and dangerous.”The House Judiciary Committee had demanded Bragg testify before Congress about the confidential investigation that led to the indictment that became public on Thursday night and share with them non-public evidence. In a letter sent Friday, Bragg acknowledged the charges publicly and doubled down on a previous letter telling the committee to back off.Bragg’s office also denounced the committee for attacking him instead of condemning Trump’s social media polemics ahead of his indictment threatening violence would break out.“Finally, as you are no doubt aware, former President Trump has directed harsh invective against District Attorney Bragg and threatened on social media that his arrest or indictment in New York may unleash ‘death & destruction,” Bragg’s...
