The Montgomery County Council voted unanimously to ban “right turns on red” at some intersections as part of an overhaul of the county’s traffic safety laws. The “Safe Streets Act of 2023” prohibits the right turns on red in busy intersections in downtown areas and “town center” areas of the county and lengthens walk times for pedestrians at crosswalks.Downtown areas in Montgomery County are defined as those areas with the highest intensity of development and include Bethesda, Friendship Heights, Silver Spring and Wheaton.Town center areas have moderate to high development and include Burtonsville, Chevy Chase Lake, Clarksburg Town Center and Germantown Center. In addition, aiming to create safer routes to school, the measure requires county staff to conduct infrastructure reviews following traffic-related incidents near school zones and bus stops. The legislation was introduced by council president Evan Glass last year, who also chairs the Tra...

CLEVELAND (AP) — Cleveland Browns star running back Nick Chubb will undergo surgery on his left knee after suffering a gruesome season-ending injury in Monday night’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.A four-time Pro Bowler in six seasons, Chubb got hurt when Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick tackled him low on a carry in the second quarter. The impact buckled the same knee Chubb injured in 2015 at Georgia and had reconstructed.Coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed Tuesday that Chubb’s season is over. He did not provide any specifics on the severity of the injury or when he’ll have the operation.“Very disappointed for Nick,” Stefanski said on a Zoom call. “He means a lot to this team, means a lot to this organization so he will be missed. But he will bounce back. I have no doubt.”The 27-year-old Chubb was taken off on a cart and transported to a Pittsburgh hospital for precaution. He was released and returned to Cleveland to undergo an MRI.The Browns (1-1) now need to reg...

Vikings sign guard Dalton Risner to give their vulnerable offensive line a boost

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings signed former Denver guard Dalton Risner on Tuesday to try to shore up what has been a problematic position for several seasons.Risner visited the Vikings for a workout during training camp. Drafted in the second round out of Kansas State in 2019, Risner started 62 games in four years for the Broncos. He became a free agent and had been unsigned. To make room on the active roster, the Vikings placed tackle Oli Udoh on injured reserve with a torn quadriceps tendon he suffered in the team’s most recent game at Philadelphia. The Vikings ( 0-2 ) are last in the NFL in rushing yards and third worst in the league with an average of 2.65 yards per attempt. Center Garrett Bradbury was sidelined by a back injury in the season opener. Right guard Ed Ingram has struggled often since winning the job as a rookie last season. “I do have a lot of confidence in our guys, but clearly we’ve got to do something a little bit differently and really focus on...

No. 25 Florida hopes to maintain its edge and sustain momentum for the first time in years

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida hasn’t won three consecutive games since Marco Wilson’s infamous shoe toss. The Gators have been on a roller coaster of sorts since that foggy night in the Swamp in December 2020. Win one, lose one. Win two, lose three. Up and down with no noticeable progress or sustained momentum. It’s been a head-scratching, stomach-churning three years for a fan base accustomed to winning and competing for championships. Coach Billy Napier might be on the verge of providing some relief.Coming off a 29-16 upset of then-No. 11 Tennessee, the now-25th-ranked Gators (2-1, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) hope to handle success better than they have in recent years. For Napier, it’s as simple as keeping his players on edge as they prepare for Charlotte (1-2) and a potential three-game winning streak Saturday night.“When you get beat and you go to the locker room and you’re on the bus after the game, you got zero text messages, right?” Napier said. “When you win and you...
